In tonight’s The Rookie episode, Officer John Nolan got called to a scene of an accident. This woman was driving when she crashed and she was left with an open wound on her side where she had been impaled. Her name was Riley. She was married and she has kids. She was on her way to them when she got involved in an accident. But when Nolan got close to her, her first concern hadn’t been about her life or her car.

She just wanted the groceries in the trunk to be delivered to her husband because the family was going to need it. It was one of the last things she said before she lost consciousness. Nolan had still been with her and so he called the time of death. And he found out that she signed an organ donation card before she died.

Riley’s organs received an armed escort back to the hospital. Nolan stuck around because he wanted to see this one through and it was while he was at the hospital that he got to meet the organ recipients. One was just a kid. A young girl. She came in with her father and they were happy that she was finally going to be receiving a heart. It turns out the girl has a rare blood type.

Riley and her unfortunate passing proved to be a blessing in disguise because it was going to save countless lives. But someone became envious of others’ success. One guy, in particular, had hated how far down his wife was on the donor list and so he decided to do something drastic. He took the hospital hostage.

This man hacked the hospital’s computers. He first began rearranging things. It left confusion as doctors were getting the wrong charts for certain patients and Harper had been one of those patients. She came in for a routine checkup during pregnancy. But her doctor was given a file about someone with prostate cancer. The doctors and the nurses were just beginning to figure out what happened when the hacks got worse. Whatever this man did had locked them out of their computers. Harper was still at the hospital and so a nurse asked her to keep an eye on the boy sleeping in the bed next to hers.

Nolan in the meantime had tried to reason with their hostage-taker. He and the rest of the team had begged this guy to release the hospital and he refused. He said he was prepared to let people die as long as his wife got the heart. His heart wasn’t at the top of the list like the girl’s because of a preexisting condition. But she didn’t want to die either. She refused to help the police in talking down her husband. The wife wasn’t going to help and later a patient did die because the doctors were locked out of their systems. The hospital administration eventually caved. They allowed Jonah’s wife to get the surgery.

She was later rushed into an OR. As she was passing, someone tried to attack her. The attacker was the father of the girl who should have gotten the heart and so now he was facing charges of the attempted mother. He will probably die before his daughter could get another chance at a heart. Something that Nolan said to both Jonah and his wife. But in the OR, before the surgery could take place, the officers allowed the wife to talk to the girl who should have gotten the heart. This one conversation was enough to convince the wife to let the girl have the heart. The girl deserved it more. She deserved the chance to go to college, to fall in love, and to even start a family. And everyone could see that.

Everyone, but Jonah. Jonah refuses to hand over the hospital back to the proper authorities. He thought he could still get what he wanted. If not a heart for his wife, then at least some money. Only it wasn’t to be. LAPD later tracked the hackers. They got one to flip on the other and so the hospital was returned to normal. Or to better state it – as normal as possible. Harper’s roommate turned out to be an abducted kid and so his “parents” were arrested for kidnapping. But Officer Chen gave a deposition on when she was kidnapped herself. She had to confront some of her worst fears only it had been worth it in end.

Meanwhile, a young girl got a heart.
