He was born in Okinawa, Japan, the son of American parents, Annette and Dewayne Bryan, while his father was in the U.S. Navy. He grew up in Oologah, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he was an active duty member, at the age of seventeen.

Zach’s paternal grandfather was Allan Eugene Bryan (the son of Walter Eugene “Jack” Bryan and Rosebud Teague).

Zach’s paternal grandmother is the daughter of Benjamin Spencer and Marguerite Parsley.

Zach’s maternal grandfather is Proctor Mullen, Jr. (the son of Proctor Mullen and Alma Ethel Wertman). Zach’s great-grandfather Proctor was the son of Samuel M. Mullen and Eliza Alice Proctor. Alma was the daughter of George Washington Wertman/Werkmam/Wertmar and Naamah Munk, whose father was German.
